Ombud Council Rules

The Ombud Council has a full suite of regulatory, supervisory and enforcement powers over financial ombuds and financial ombud schemes and is tasked with making Ombud Council Rules (binding subordinate legislation) which impose obligations on ombuds and ombud schemes; on-site inspections, information gathering; designating schemes to deal with certain complaints where there is a jurisdiction gap and being able to impose penalties and take other enforcement action if a scheme commits serious misconduct. Designation

The Ombud Council is mandated to facilitate access by financial customers to appropriate ombuds. Section 211(1)(a) of the Financial Sector Regulation Act, 2017 empowers the Ombud Council to designate an existing ombud scheme to deal with and resolve complaints that are not covered by another recognised industry ombud scheme or statutory scheme.
